The Bamboo Sources in China

China is the world’s leading producer of bamboo, whether the type, size stock of bamboo or the production of bamboo shoots all rank first in the world.

As our Chinates, soil and topography change and biological difference of bamboo’s characteristics, the distribution of Chinese bamboo is obviously zonal and regional. They can be roughly divided into fire main major areas of bamboos.

(1)The Area of Scattered Growing Bamboo in the North

This area is at the latitude between 30°N and 40°N, the annual average temperature is 12°C-17°C and the average precipitation is 600-1200mm.In this area, there are about 10 clusses snd 29 kinds of bamboos.They are mostly in southeast of Gansu,north of Sichuan, southwest of Shanxi, Henan,Hubei and Anhui.

(2)The Area of Mixed Bamboo in South of Yangze River

They are in the south-east of Sichuan,Hunan,Jiangxi,Zhejiang,South of Anhui and northwest of Fujian. This area is about at latitude 25°N-30°N and the annual average temperature is 15°C-20°C and the average precpitation is 1200-2000mm.This area is featured with mixed growth of scattered and lash bamboo.It is the largest area of bamboo in China. And the source of bamboo is very rich there. There is the largest man-made bamboo forest in this area.It is also the area which produces the most bamboo, especially grass bamboo.

(3)The Area of High-land bsmboo in Southwest

It locates at the latitude of 10°N-20°N. The average temperasture is 8°C-12°C,and the annual precipitation is 800-1000mm. It mainly includes southeast of Tibetan,northwest and northeast of Yunnan and west and south of Sichuan. It mainly produces pandas’ mainfood—arrow and mount bamboos.

(4)The Area of Lash Growing Bamboo in South

It locates at the latitude of 10°N-20°N. The annual average temperature is 20°C-22°C and the average precipitation is 1200-2000mm. According to the component of bamboo and the condition for growth,it can be divided into 2 regions:one is south China region,and the other is southwest region in Assia.

(5) The Area of Climbing Bamboo in Hainan and Yunnan

It includes the middle part of Hainan island. The broder districts of east and west of Yunnan,and southeast of Tibetan—Chayu and Motou.Bamboo in this area is featured with the growth of climbing bamboo and lash bamboo.

Bamboo Drug and Healthy Food

Bamboo’s Medical Application

The ancient medical book Gleaning of Detailed Outlines says“bamboo have the functions like benefit the organs and the circulation of blood ,removing the spittle,and helping digest,etc.” The book Chinese Matrial Medica Origin records that bamboo cooked with meat benefits feminine blood.

Bamboo shoots soup or included in Chinese medicine are both good for people who comes down with small pox,warmblood and renal failure. Bamboo shoots for cooking soup can be used to clean away heat and toxic and diminishing inflammation,and ruducing pregnant woman’s headache and curing chilren’s fear. It can cure the long diarrhea,the rectocele and constipation when it is cooked with rice and other seanoning matters. It is cooked for soup,and  people drunk as tea,it will make one sober up.

The dried bamboo shoots eaten by the incects after  being washed and cooked with Chinese medicine can be use to cure ascites tumefaction and urinate problems. The clinical reported that it can remove or at leat  reduce the  ascites in the schistosome people when3 grams worm bamboo shoots cooked with other Chinese medicine like 3gram bottle gourd, and taking it 20 times for a course of treatment.

During the treatment,salt is absteained. And a proper amount of vitermine B,C ,glucose and iron can be added. If used to treat kidey inflammation edema, 9 grams worm bamboo shoots and golden gourd respectively cooked together in water and take it 3 times a day for 3 days contiually;thus it can gradually reduce the detumescence. The percentage of recovery is as heigh as 90%.

Bamboo shoots are considered as a healthy food for losing weight and prevernting cancers. Because the fiber,and semi-fiber in the bamboo shoots can quicken the movement of the intestines,it can also promote to secrete the digestive grand.It is good for digesting and voidance to reduce the accumulation and absorbtion of the harzard substances;thus, it can reduce the chances of toxicosis and cancers.The resent years,people also found that the amylose subustance in the bamboo shoots are of the function to prevent cancers.

Bamboos’ morphological features

Bamboos belong to the classification of monocotyledoneae, Gramineae, the grass family, Bambusoideae.It has the general chracteristic as the monocotyledoneae plant ,namely, 1cotyledon ,no taproot, in fibrous root system. Its vascular bundleno in stem-round is star-spreaded,no cambium but newborn tissues,no bigger-growth.Its leaves contain parallel veins or Arc vein,and it has petiole.

The part of bamboo undergroud is generally called Rhizome. The rhizome is multi- noded, each of which has a pair of opposite lateral bud.the lateral bud sprout and growed into new stem and out of the earth.then it becomes a bamboo.The part of bamboos on the ground called bamoo stalk which is the main part of the bamboo.Some bamboos can be as tall as 20-30m.as wide as 30cm.Some bamboos can be as small as several millimeter wide.The part inside is empty and noded,but some of stalks is solid,for example, banboo.The leaves are on the side issues,each issue has one leaf.The leaves are Staggered oppositely and parallelly.Bamboo do not have flowers easily ,after that it would die.So it is a unfavonian symptom.

Regional Classification of Bamboo - Asia, the Pacific area of Bamboo Zone

The area is biggest bamboo plant distribution of the world, possessing abundant resources of bamboo species and a huge area of bamboo forest. No matter the specie of bamboo or the area of bamboo forest, both of them account for about 80% of the world. Its distribution ranges west from India (54oE), east to Pacific and Oceania island (180ow), south from the southern New Zealand (42oS), north to the northern part of Japan (51oN).

In this large region, none of the clothing, food, shelter and transportation of the main bamboo production country's people is not closely linked with bamboo. The local ancient ancestors had largely used bamboo in combating weapons, farming, fishing and hunting's tools and housing construction material. In modern times, there continuously have new technologies of processing and utilization being invented and created, new products being developed and utilized.

And the development and utilization of a large number of bamboo had a profound impact on local culture and history. China is a best example, not only having several hundred years of history recorded on the "bamboo strip", but also a lot of letters, painting, poetry, dance related with bamboo.

The same phenomenon also exists in Japan, Thailand. No wonder there was a British scientist said: If we say that the discovery and use of corn create the Indian culture and history, and no doubt that the discovery and use of bamboo create the Asian civilization and history. Therefore, this zone can be called as "bamboo village" or "holy land of bamboo civilization." The bamboo species in this area about 4 / 5 are the  cluster bamboo and only 1 / 5 are pachymorph bamboo.

And the number of tall stalk-straight, fine texture and taste edible bamboo shoots species is more than one hundred. they have very high economic value. However, in this area of the eastern part of Oceania and  island nations on the Pacific the resources of bamboo species are quite poor.

Regional Classification of Bamboo - Africa Bamboo Zone

African bamboo zone is the smallest one of the three main distribution areas, south from southern Mozambique (220S), north to  the north-east of Sudan(160N), including from South Africa on the west coast of Senegal began to turn eastward through Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria in the south, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Zaire, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique until the east coast of Madagascar Island, formed a rhomboidal distribution center from the northwest to the southeast. In the distribution center, bamboo is an integral part of African tropical rain forest and mixed evergreen and deciduous forest. Though in the mountain areas of Kenya and Ethiopia Arudinama alpina and Oxytenthera abyssinica could form a five natural forest and become the undergrowth of mixed forest, and the areas respectively reach 130,000 and 100,000 hectares, but overall, the bamboo flora in African continent is very poor, and the exploitation and utilization is also very bad. Native species of bamboo, coupled with the introduction of several bamboo have a total of more than 10. But it is interesting to note that in the island of Madagascar, there are 11 generas about 40 species of bamboo, the specie resources is much richer than the continent. Therefore African Bamboo can be divided into two sub-districts Madagascar island and the mainland .

In European Continent there is no distribution of native bamboo specie. But due to the local residents' individual interests and the attention of beautification and protection of the environment, Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlander and the United Kingdom have introduced more than a dozen generas more than 100 species of bamboo such big as Phyllostachys pubescens and small as red bamboo from Asia, Africa and Latin America, used profoundly in the virescence of gardens, especially from China and Japan over the introductions of the hardy Phyllostachys, Pleioblastus, Red Bamboo are the main parts. In addition, Europe, in particular the Western Europe, each year from China and Thailand etc. imports a large number of various bamboo seedlings, bamboo products and canned bamboo shoots, the number respectively reached several million items (sets) and some 100,000 tons.

Regional Categories of Bamboo

Bamboo is a class of plant of Gramineae Bambusoideae. It is known There are 150 genera and 1225 kinds and bamboo forest area of 14,000,000 hectares around the world. They are widely distributed in the  latitude 46o to 47o latitude between the tropical, subtropical and warm temperate areas of the earth

The mostly concentrated areas are in East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific and Indian Ocean islands which also have the most species. According to geographical location, other continents in addition to the European continent can find the native species of bamboos in the Fourth Glacier. Rustling bamboo is located in tropics and southern sub-tropics areas, Arundinaceous bamboo is located in the northern sub-tropics and warm temperate areas. Leading bamboo was named the "pan-tropical" species of bamboo for its wide range of distributions in a of tropical and southern subtropical distribution of three major areas of bamboo。

Bamboo’s habitat

Bamboo belongs to the class of grass Bambusadea.There are about 150 varietis,1225 kinds in the world.And bamboo covers almost 14 million hectares,which is widely distrabuted in tropical,subtropical and warm temperate areas between 46 degree north latitude and 47 degree south latitude, especially distributed in the areas between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn,such as East Asia, Southeast Asia,and the islands on Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean in which the bamboo’s distribution is most concentrated,and the bamboo’s species are most rich as well.

Bamboo is one kind of evergreen shallow root plants(but there are still a small number of species of bamboo defoliates leaves).Bamboo is sensitive,it highly demands on heat and humidity,so the distribution of heat and humidity on the earth’s surface determines the geographical distribution of bamboo.South Asia is the center of bamboo’s distribution.It is a ideal habitat for bamboo because it is located in tropic and southern subtropic,which supplies stable heat;at the same time it is impacted by Pacific and Indian Ocean monsoon which provide abundant rainfull.

Bamboo always grows together with other trees.And it often be negleted in the past, because it always under the main forest.But with the features of fast growth and strong ability of reproduction,bamboo can recover the secondary forest when the upper-lin is destroied. Now more and more people plant bamboo to form plantation because of bamboo’s high economic value and its wide usage. What’s more,bamboo has strong rhizome so that it can spread quickly.That’s the reason why in the recent decates,the earth’s forest area is declining gradually (according to the research,from 1998 the Tropical forest disappeared an average of 2.425 million hm2 each year,that’s 46.14 hm2 per minute),however,the bamboo’ area is increasing.At present,the bamboo covers an area of about 22 million hm2.
