Bamboo Folkways in Yunnan

Bamboo folkways are a great part of culture in yunnan。They are composed of bamboo marriage custom,funeral custom,singing and dancing custom,bamboo planting and protecting custom ect.

1.Bamboo Marriage Custom:

Bamboo in marriage is a symbol of purity，favonian and more sons,  more blessings。Just take Achang clansman for example when they got marriaged，they hold ceremony of “砍竹门”（cutting bamboo wood）

2. Bamboo Funeral Custom:

Bamboo has the symbol of turning undead and coming back to soul.When Dai clansman are end，their relatives choose some bamboo wood to be cut and weave into a small bamboo mansion for the dead,so the dead’s soul could go to the heaven with a house.When Hani clansman are dead,beima(priest) hold the funeral,beima would put a bamboo straight up before the dead’s.And a white clouth should be tied on the bamboo.When De’ang clansman are dead,people should play “bamboo dance” on the dead’s funeral.it is a manner to see them off. The folks who are admire bamboo think that bamboo is the origion of life,and the end-result of life. When Yi clansman are dead, they made memorial tablets with bamboo for ancients.this memorial tablets are called “madu”.In their opinion,”madu”is the end-result or substitution of soul. When Nu clansman are dead,people would blow clarion of bamboo，reporting death to all other villagers.

3.Bamboo Planting:

When it is april or may,Yi people wear caps made by bamboo.It is such a cuntom which you can see everywhere.other peoples plant bamboo trees on the hills ,on the mountains,on the slopes and anywhere else. It is a tradition.Almost every family has a yard of bamboo.

Bamboo culture has been an important part in Yunan.
