Bamboo is gramineous bambusoideae plant. (The world’s classification on bambusoideae began in 1788.) Early in the Western Zhou Dynasty ,3000 years ago China began to plant bamboo for landscaping. As the rapid development of the urbanization and globalization, bamboo is used more and more extensively in landscape ,and its function is also being excavated.
It is of great importance in both thoery and practice to promote the quality of landscape construction and improve the living environment that we should have a good understanding ot bamboo’s usage in the landscaping.

In China
Early in Zhou dynasty, there was records of the applications of bamboo to the construction of imperial gardens. It was proved through archaeology in Qin dynassy that there were activities of buliding the landscape with bamboos in Shanglinyuan in Xianyang.
During Wei,Jin and the North and South dynasties which were of great turmoil, people not only promoted the liberation on thoughts but also brought forth in the field of art.They planted bamboos numerously in imperial landscapes ,in official private gardens and in the temples.In the Tang dynasty and Song dynasty, it came to the height that bamboo was used to landscape construction.
The book Guang Qun Fang Pu recorded that In Song dynasty, bamboo which was planted in the iner park would grow lush. It can clearly be seen that bamboo was widely used in landscaping during the Song dynasty.
During the North Song dynasty , people took the emperor Song Wei Zong’s “Shou Shan Gen Yue” as an example of a garden built with bamboo.
We can also know from the book Luo Yang Ming Yuan Ji written by Li Ge Fei from North Song Dynasty that the famous gardens in Luo Yang that among the nineteen parts , three fifths were water , two fifths were bambaoos and one fifth was buildings . Growing bamboos in the gardens became one of the means for the scholars to pursue elegance.
