The Skills of Painting Bamboo

There are two traditional methods to Paint Bamboo ,that is , freehand brushwork and double thick. Double thick has a series of strict laws, suitable for stroke; while freehand brushwork complete it by the laws of ink painting directly. Painting just likes the calligraphy. Painting bamboo using freehand brushwork need obsorbing methods of Chinese calligraphy, in order to achieve the verve of painting bamboo.

For example, the ancient people painted bamboo branches usually taking the calligraphy of Lishu; painting the knobs by technique of writing cursive; painting leaves by writing Xingshu. However, nothing is absolute.Zheng Banqiao ,living in Qing Dynasty ,painting bamboo leaves, used the his own originality of "six and a half," ,so that the field of the shape of painting bamboo becomes a new uproar, which fully embodies the truth of "The way is not fixed".

Where does law come from? It is from the practice of life. As long as we learn to master the traditional basic method, at the same time, continue to observe and paint, ones can certainly be able to draw it well.

The following is four parts of painting bamboo by freehand brushwork:

First of all, the painting technique of bamboo leaves: It can refer to the form of the words of "" ,"" and "", as writing in Xingshu echo every stroke to stay active, to sent to the pen nib forceful , also like writing left-falling stroke, we are ready to write a left-falling stroke with strength and definition, and really press but false-rise.

Second, the painting technique of bamboo pole --- bamboo pole painting was similar to writing the Weibei. First, the side of the front line on the paper turns into cursive writing. When the section I finishes, continue to paint section II ,though the stroke are broken. Using the surplus ink paint the second pole, once again, paint pole in the third and fourth pole. When using up the ink , take in water and then paint it again.

Third, the painting technique of bamboo branch: branch commonly knows as "staghorn" or "painted bone.".Use pens in a way of flexiblity and straight, just like in cursive writing.

Finally, the painting of bamboo shoots: Paint shoot in accordance with a decent growth of its structure. The color should be concentrated on light, not thick,to convey its charm and verve by using ink.

Take Yang Zhenkai’s "Cuiwei" for example:

Step one:

According to the composition, paint the bamboo branch using by linght ink. Pay attention to the handwriting’s coherence and the color’s variety . Painting bamboo branch should be "long in the middle and short in the two poles , when needing curve bend poles, not branches." There is a ancient saying :"a thin pole, two pole up, three pole enough, put out a four-pole."

Step two:
Using surplus ink continue to draw offshoot, write smoothly and decisively, with power and round. Then painting bamboo leaves use from thick ink to light. Attention to the fasle and actual situation and changes .
