The traditional use of bamboo
(1)Use of ragmented nature:Weaving equipment,bamboo blind ,bamboo mat,bamboo shade,bamboo fence , Shan Gu,rib,lantern etc;
(2)Use of its loading capacity:Yan Chuan, drying pole, flagpole, a stretcher, scaffolding, bamboo bed ,bamboo chopsticks , pillar, beams, doors and windows, flooring, bamboo bridges, bamboo rafts and other furniture and appliances;
(3)Use of its bounce:Bow, crossbow and fishing rod etc;
(4)Use of its resistance:Bedpost, machine foot, walking stick, umbrella handle, vaulting pole, bamboo nail, and Bamboo hoop etc;
(5)Use of its hollow features:Water tankers, buckets, water pipes, chimney, blowtube, bamboo bottles , flute and all kinds of instruments;
(6)Use of its appearance value:Bamboo rope,handicrafts,toys etc.
In fact,the wide use of bamboo is too varied to enumerate.Taking the minorities of western and southeast Yunnan for example,their ancestors formed the habit of using the bamboo from one generation to another,lived in bamboo houses, paved the bamboo mat,weared the bamboo hat and burned the firewood of bamboo.Also,the people who lived in the bamboo houses used the bamboo chopsticks to enjoy the tasty bamboo shoot .Besides,they built the bridge by using the bamboo instead of the wood,crossed the river by cutting down the bamboo as rafts,controled the floods with the help of the bamboo.
Furthermore,all the appliances such as barrels,baskets,straws and paintings were made from bamboo.They used the bamboo to make waterpipes.To celebrate the Dai Calendar New Year(Water-sprinkling Festival), the main rocket used to show the display of “rise” was made from bamboo slips. Remarkably, the Dai ethnic minority group took one special use of bamboo to cook “Bamboo Rice” with the green straw of Cephalostachyum pergracile which is highly fatastic.
The Multiple Usage of Bamboo
Bamboo is a common plant , whose branches are not so rough ,but quite flexible , and you can’t bend it easily , thus bamboo is quite popular among people . Another important factor that make bamboo so popular is its multiple use .Then we will talk something about bamboo’s application :
People have been fond of making furniture from bamboo since the ancient time ,and they used bamboo to make many kinds of furniture ,such as chair ,table , bed and bamboo mat ,etc .What’s more , another factor that make bamboo so popular among people ,esp in China, is bamboo’s close relationship with Chinese culture .
For example ,bamboo can be used in making chopsticks , brush pens , cookers and so on , all these articles have close relationship with people’s life and Chinese traditional culture . At the same time ,bamboo can be used to make musical instruments ,such as bamboo pipe , reed pipe and cucurbit flute ,etc , which are important component of Chinese great culture . In addition , bamboo is regarded as darling especially in some minority nationality in Yunnan province , for the climate in this area is quite suitable for bamboo to grow , as a result , planting bamboo become a custom in this area .
What’s more , local residents use bamboo to make all sort of articles by their great intelligence . The articles that they manufacture include bamboo bed , bamboo building , bamboo basket , bamboo cup ,and instruments for hunting and for entertainment and so on .These plain manufacture not only become a pride of our Chinese ,but also make the foreigners gasp in admiration !
